Avadhuta

The word "Avadhuta" comes from the Sanskrit language. The ideal of the Avadhutas is:

  • A - free from desires, stainless from beginning to end, ever in Bliss

  • VA - detached, living in the present

  • DHU - his body maybe covered with dust yet his mind is washed clean.

  • TA - contemplation of reality, renunciation of thought and action; complete freedom from ignorance and egotism.

This order of monks and nuns dedicate themselves to two ideals: "Self-realization and Service to Humanity".

"Many people think that social service alone is the best process of spiritual practice, but they are mistaken.

Through intuitional practice (meditation) a spiritualist succeeds in elevating themselves in individual life.

A person who develops the cognitive faculty in this way will spontaneously do social service. Service is the way and the life of such a spiritual aspirant. A balance between one's individual mission and social mission will thus be established." (Shrii Shrii Anandamurti)
